New York Times>> Down With Helvetica: Design Your Own Font

Great article in the NYTimes about fonts. Yummy fontness to my Friday. The article itself has some great links, but here's the restaurant logo Woodberry Kitchen that is mentioned. I (of course) had to look it up! {Illustration by James C. Best, Jr. for NYTimes}

The Handwritten Letter

This weekend I nonchalantly told my younger cousin that I'd be waiting for him to write me a letter from 'Camp'. He told me he would only be emailing, because writing letters is so 18th century. I was saddened to hear this. In camp we didn't have computer stations and mail-call was looked forward to each day. Yes some children received faxes from their parents, but even the fax was handwritten. I haven't written a letter in awhile and long for the days of picking out the perfect piece of laid stationary to scribe my thoughts. Not only do I love writing letters, but receiving them as well. There is nothing like original handwriting. It's a window into a person's soul. I love these thoughts from a Mohawk paper printed piece that I have here in the office.

Thinking of writing a letter or postcard this summer? The Modern Letter Project has some great post, products, and interviews to inspire you.

27 Dresses

I was 'doing some typeface swooning' when I first saw this poster! What a brilliant idea - anything with a human touch gets my approval. Maybe now readers & passerby will read the names of everyone who worked on the film. I wonder who or designed this poster? If I were them I'd be overwhelmed by all the great portfolio pieces to 'show off'. Check out the 27 models in graphic dresses!

Helvetica on my Mind

I finally went to see Helvetica this weekend at the IFC. It was fanta-b-ulous! The typographers, the quotes, flashbacks to Type 101....Michael Beirut of Pentagram was as witty as ever. Jen and I have enjoyed peeking into his portfolio lately. Was nice to see Matthew Carter featured in the film commenting how he explains to people 'just what he does for a living'. He spoke at Syracuse back in the day and gave each of us signed prints of a Matthew Carter original. (still need to get that framed)

My helvetica wishlist.
Still need to see this.
I want this.
Actually I'd take it all.

Packaging at HBO

I rarely wander through Times Square, but with out of town relatives visiting—this was a sight that could not go unseen. Good thing—or I would have missed this fabulous no-frills comedy packaging display in the HBO studio windows. Kudos to HBO for their creative usage of type.

The Hand is Mightier Than the Font

So excited to find this interview with Bernard Maisner, as I was upset to learn I had missed his lecture at The Grolier Club in July. As huge fan of lettering – he is truly a living master of this art form. The interview is very thorough in all aspects of his journey and talents. I have been meaning to sharpen up my own hand lettering skills at the Society of Scribes. They offer many classes in different hand lettering styles.

His lasting words had me swooning! Maisner states, "I sincerely hope I am not the last letterer out there." "I cannot imagine a world without beautiful hand lettering."

I couldn't agree more.
