Was just looking on moviefone to see what movies are coming out soon. And what do I see, but this flick I cannot miss - Bill Cunningham New York. Check out the trailer here. Playing at the Film Forum right now.
"An intimate portrait of Bill Cunningham, the 80 year old New York Times photographer who for forty years has been riding around New York City on his bicycle, documenting fashion trends on the street by day and New York's social scene at night for his two weekly columns in the Sunday Times."

A Vogue Idea

I couldn't help but think of this quote as I walked out of the theater...
"When I first moved to New York and I was totally broke, sometimes I would buy Vogue instead of dinner. I felt it fed me more."

FIT Museum Evening
Last night Cait and I went to the FIT Musuem see Isabel Toledo: From the Inside Out and Fashion Politics (which just opened yesterday!). Both were great little exhibits. The Isabel Toledo show exhibits a beautiful retrospective of her work with Reuben's fashion illustrations dancing above you! Michelle Obama's inaugural dress is also there on display, with the fashion illustration that began it all. It's a great visit if you are in the NYC area. Free and easy to visit.

Manolo Blahnik for Coca-Cola
While I was away I spotted an article in a foreign design magazine about Manolo Blahnik's Coca-Cola Light bottle. Pictures speak louder than words when you don't understand the language.

Current Fashion Exhibits in NYC
Some fashion-y exhibits I must attend in the spring:
The International Center for Photography is having Edward Steichen:
In High Fashion, The CondĂ© Nast Years, 1923–1937. (January 16–May 3, 2009) Not going to be in NYC?---Watch this curated interactive piece from the NYTimes, here.
The Museum of the City of New York celebrates a timeless designer in "Valentina: American Couture and the Cult of Celebrity" (Feb 14-May 17)

Charm Holders?
Spotted this in Lucky magazine this month. Are charm holders back in style??? Seeing this image brought back some 1993-94 memories.

Say it isn't so, DOMINO!
I don't even know what to say. Domino magazine is no more. Every month I await its arrival. Last January Blueprint & House and Home bit the dust as well. I'm going to have to pick up Domino: The Book of Decorating ASAP. I hope they leave the domino website up---I know many who use the gallery section for inspiration. I'm going to have to start importing my magazines from other countries. Elle Decoration from the UK to start! Any other suggestions?

JCrew for the First Lady & First Daughters
JCrew designed items specifically for the first lady, Michelle & her daughters, Malia and Sasha Obama. Read more about it here. JCrew also got paid for their services, as the Obama camp asked for invoices for every step along the way. Good design is worth good money! Sometimes we designers forget that! I am also a huge fan of Isabel Toledo, who I first wrote about here and Caitlin's illustration of Isabel is amazing.

FYI: Just saw that Simon Doonan of Barneys is LOVING that Michelle Obama loves Isabel Toledo.

American Express Commercial: Diane von Furstenberg
The commercial I most enjoyed during the Oscars is finally online. I really like how they show a glimpse into Diane's studio and fashion thoughts. It's very inspiring for a young designer.

Mad for Madewell
I haven't been to the official re-launch of the Madewell, NYC store yet (I loved it when I browsed in December). The website is extremely clean yet amusing (girls that dance around) and has this great exterior illustration that pops up briefly. Graphic designer Abby Clawson Low does their unique newsletters. I'm a huge fan of her 'style'. Abby's home was also shown on Design*Sponge this week!

Added: Thank you Abby for letting us know about the TALENT behind the Madewell site.
"The website was done by Elizabeth Karas http://www.elizabethkaras.com/ who is a very talented web designer."

Coach Musings
I noticed this Coach medallion tag, while browsing the bags at Bloomingdales. Loving the big hunk of medal. It's only on their chunkier bags. Their site also talks about the new Legacy Boutique opening on Bleeker Street. Saw some pictures and I'm wishing the store was more authentic and classic. It looks poppy, modern to me. I'll have to check it out.

DVF Spring Campaign
Did you see the new Diane von Furstenberg 2008 Ad Campaign, featuring Model Natalia Vodianova by François-Marie Banier? It's very different from anything she's done lately. The handwritten type and paint splatters are very gritty for the DVF brand. There is a beautiful film on the DVF website that shows the creative process.
I also enjoyed the new commercial during the Oscar's featuring Diane as the new face of “Are you a Cardmember?” It was nice to get a sneak peak into her home & studio life.

Swooning over Henri Bendel 1895
I just can't get enough of Henri Bendel 1895. The website is so alive and energetic. Eye candy for my day - and the brown authentic print, L-O-V-E. Packaging speaks louder than words. Between the brown stripes and Izak's illustrations I could be gazing all day. Stop by the store as well. Everything is better in person.

This is the most visually stimulating sitemap I have ever seen!

Button Up at Chanel
Hands down the coolest image I saw last week. Catching up on my Thursday Style sections and didn't want to forget this article/image.
CHANEL REDUX Karl Lagerfeld leads models back into the “Chanel jacket.”
"Of course—how could I forget to mention it?—the hub of the show was a 75-replica of a Chanel cardigan jacket, made from wood and painted to resemble concrete. The enormous braided jacket was certainly kitsch—a Big Boy on the Seine. But the style is also iconic, and Lagerfeld’s idea was to show that the jacket was only the best-known of Chanel’s creations. She designed a lot of styles, some of which, as he pointed out in the studio, looked as if they came from nature. The models got dressed inside the replica jacket, which revolved slowly during the show, and then returned to the dressing area through an opening made by a flap in the jacket."
